As a cisgender, heterosexual, first-generation Filipino-Canadian raised by two immigrants who worked very hard to financially provide for their children, Christabel is also aware of the ways in which she is both privileged and limited, while not taking for granted the power dynamics that can exist in a therapeutic relationship. As such, Christabel believes in tapping into the expertise of the client. Her work may involve supporting clients with forming a clearer understanding of the barriers to positive change, identifying the factors that the client can realistically address, and exploring ways to manage the emotions that come from being unable to control other factors that influence the client’s reality. She may also assist clients in cultivating new relationships with thought patterns and emotions, learning to ground in the present when issues pull focus away from what is most important in life, or designing personal self-care plans that honour holistic health. Every step of the way, Christabel works with and learns from her clients as they broaden their skill sets, develop self-confidence, or build the community and connections that can help them move forward. Christabel’s background working with neurodivergent youth, as well as young people with different behavioural and socioemotional challenges has impacted her counselling approach. She integrates different counselling models into her work with individuals such as, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Internal Family Systems (IFS), Solution Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT), and mindfulness techniques. She also draws from the Gottman Method, Attachment Theory, and the Developmental Model when working with Couples. With every new client meeting, she uses a collaborative approach where clients are active agents in their treatment planning and evaluation. Aside from her counselling practice, which she feels quite passionately about, Christabel is an unapologetic music nerd. In her journey to accept her self-identity and embrace her Filipino culture–music has helped her along the way. She enjoys a good meal, coffee, or long walk around her neighbourhood . After 6 years away living on the island and in Toronto, she is happy to have settled back into the place where she was born and raised in East Vancouver. Christabel provides services in English.
