Bio: Hey there! My name is Asante, your friendly neighbourhood therapist. I’m happy you found your way here. I know from personal experience that mustering up the courage to talk to someone can be difficult and scary, but can also be a turning point in one’s life and relationships. So whatever happens next, I commend you for taking this step.

Okay, a little bit about me – I’m a listener first and foremost, someone who will be your biggest cheerleader while being unafraid to ask you tough questions. As for the messy stuff, I’m not afraid to go there. I want to get to know and understand you, the whole you, not just the stuff that brought you to the therapy room. I believe trust, safety, and rapport are foundational to any relationship and my first goal working with clients is to establish these elements. We are all whole people who deserve to be seen, understood, and accepted. This is where healing begins.

I love people from all walks of life. As such, I’m open to working with just about anybody. That said, I am especially interested in working with couples, supporting partners to see, hear, and understand their romantic counterpart(s), to begin speaking the same language again, to re-stitch trust that has been frayed, to perceive challenging behaviours as unmet needs, in order to deepen compassion, empathy, and intimacy in your relationships.

With respect to individual work, my interests focus on experiences of childhood trauma, shame, identity conflicts, neurodivergence such as ADHD and autism, distress related to discrimination and oppression, substance misuse, complex and challenging family dynamics, high performance in work and athletics. I have worked with youth, adults across the life-span, and folks from equity-denied populations including immigrants, 2SLGTBQIA+ community members, people of colour, etc..

In my work, I seek to take an integrative approach drawing from modalities such as narrative therapy, cognitive behavioural therapy, dialectical behavioural therapy, emotion focused therapy, acceptance and commitment therapy, and internal family systems therapy.

It is very important for me to work from an anti-oppressive, trauma-informed, culturally humble lens that sees people as whole people and not just their challenges. As a Black therapist, I bring a grounded, lived understanding to my work in Black couples therapy and BIPOC individuals, alongside my clinical training.

Ultimately, we all just want to feel safe and fulfilled with ourselves, in our work, and in our relationships. I want to help you get there. If any of this resonates with you I’d love to connect. 🙂

When I’m not working, you’ll  probably find me going for a run, hanging out with my dog, writing poetry, learning something new, or cheering on one of Toronto’s local sports teams.
